It’s about time I got around to setting this up.
In my day job as an editor/journalist I thrive on deadlines and pride myself on meeting them. Setting up this website has been a different story, and it’s something I am definitely working on!
I decided on zoepowell.com.au so I had a place to put a lot of my work – with Leader and also my own writing. I want to get into a few of my own projects outside work so it makes sense to have a place where people can get in touch, and which brings together my other online accounts on Instagram and Twitter.
I do have a professional Facebook account but I don’t use it much at the moment. I will be looking to change that!
I will update the section here about me in coming weeks, but a brief overview.
I have a Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications) from Swinburne Uni. I graduated in 2005.
I got a casual job as a journalist at Leader Newspapers shortly after and then got offered a cadetship. I worked as a journo at Leader for three years before packing my bags with my now-husband for a stint working and travelling.
Based in London, I did some admin work for superannuation company Metlife while travelling around the UK and Europe.
After 18 months, we moved back to Melbourne and Leader were good enough to pretty much give me my job back (coincidentally someone had just resigned) and I have been there since!
I have slowly moved up the ranks, first as a deputy editor (which was mostly online and social media work at the time) and then a fill-in editor across all of Leader’s mastheads.
In September last year, I got the call-up for a permanent role which is where I am today – editor of the Knox and Free Press Leader newspapers, covering the Knox and Dandenong Ranges areas of Melbourne. Being born and bred in Melbourne’s outer east, and now living near the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley, it is a great gig!
*Shameless plug time* You can read all the latest local news on Leader’s outer east website. Knox and Free Press have their own Facebook accounts as well, which we update with breaking news and other interesting bits and pieces.
Outside of work, I love getting out and about in the local area. I’m very lucky to live close to some of Melbourne’s most picturesque areas and love being out in the sunshine!
I have a strong interest in health and food. I am an ambassador for I Quit Sugar (more on that in a later post I am sure!). I like a good coffee and glass of wine. I have developed a love of cooking, although I don’t really experiment as much as I would like!
I’m interested in mindfulness, yoga and meditation (which I should do a LOT more often).
I dabble in a bit of very amateur photography and I’m a bit addicted to Instagram and taking photos of food, sunsets, the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs, and Dougall, our almost-one-year-old border collie (how predictable!).
I love travel. The 2009-2010 overseas trip saw visits to places including Switzerland, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey (and Gallipoli for Anzac Day), France, Italy, Austria, Dubai, Belgium, Germany, Croatia, Ireland and Scotland.
I’ve been to Thailand a few times and did a cruise a few years ago to New Zealand. I’ve also just come back from two weeks in Bali. I think once you have the travel bug, you can’t shake it. Having a mortgage does mean less money for that, though!
Anywho, I think that is all from me for now. I just realised I said a “brief” overview. Ha!
For anyone still reading – as I’m pretty new to this whole website/blog biz, feel free to comment, give me feedback (positive and negative) and I will keep updating regularly. It’s all a work in progress!
And feel free to contact me (Instagram, Twitter, or email firstname.lastname@example.org) with any other inquiries or questions about anything that you think may be of interest. I’m always up for a chat!
